Dr. McVary graduated from Northwestern University with a bachelor's degree with distinction in 1979. He received his medical degree from Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in 1983 and completed a two year program in general surgery at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. A four year urology residency, which included one year investigating neural influences on sexual refluxes as the Riba Urology Research Fellow, followed. Since that time, Dr. McVary has joined the staff at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and is now a Professor of Urology at the Feinberg School. He serves as the Director of the Center for Sexual Health at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, conducts the Prostate Diseases Minimally Invasive Program, and heads the Andrology Fellowship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Dr. McVary's primary clinical areas are prostate diseases, including prostate cancer and BPH, as well as the evaluation and treatment of sexual function. Dr. McVary has had extensive experience conducting clinical trials for the National Institutes of Health and numerous private and industry foundations.

Dr. McVary has an active research laboratory that investigates the molecular mechanisms controlling the neural role in erectile dysfunction as well as the neural control of prostate development and function. He is the principal investigator on two NIH clinical trials (U01) studying medical and surgical therapies for prostate disease. In addition, he is a member of the Lurie Cancer Center and the graduate school faculty. Dr. McVary recently received a 5 year NIH $1.1 million grant for studying the effect of microwave technology for the non-invasive treatment of BPH.

He is currently a member of the National Institutes of Health MTOPS Steering Committee, an Executive Board member of the National Institutes of Health Minimally Invasive Surgeries Trial (MIST) for BPH and the Executive Board member of the NIH Complementary and Alternative Therapies for Urologic Symptoms Trial (CAMUS). Dr. McVary is Chairman of the AUA/ABU Clinnical Guidelines for BPH and contributes regularly to national, federal and international panels to establish the guidelines for management of erectile dysfunction and treatment of BPH.
