Dr. Steers obtained his Bachelors of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University in 1977 and his MD from the Medical College of Ohio in 1980 where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha honorary society and received the Marian Anderson Award in Surgery. After completing his urology residency at the University of Texas Houston and M.D.Anderson Hospital in 1986, Dr Steers was awarded an American Urological Association Scholar in NeuroPharmacology at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1988 he joined the Department of Urology at the University of Virginia where he became Chair of the Department of Urology in 1995. From 2000 to 2003 Dr Steers was co- Director of the Paul Mellon Prostate Cancer Research Institute. In 2003 he received the Hovey Dabney Endowed Chair in Urology. Dr Steers is currently the Editor of the Journal of Urology, a Trustee and President- Elect (2010) of the American Board of Urology, Chair of the combined ABU/ABOG fellowship committee on female pelvic medicine, a Director on the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and President of the University of Virginia physician’s practice plan.

Dr Steers is listed in America’s Top Doctors and Best Doctors in America guides and has been the recipient of numerous awards including the AUA’s Gold Cystoscope and Distinguished Scholar Awards and the Dornier Innovative Research Award. Dr Steers has been elected to many scientific/professional societies, including the Physiological Society of London, American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons and Clinical Society. With over 300 publications and two patents, Dr. Steers has been a visiting professor and lecturer throughout the world discussing his diverse clinical interests that span from robotic surgery and bio-imaging, to bladder, prostate and sexual disorders. In addition to chairing the National Institute of Health’s (NIH) Urinary Incontinence and Interstitial Cystitis Clinical Trials groups, Dr Steers has been involved with the development of drugs for erectile dysfunction, urinary incontinence and prostate disease. In 2005 he was named to the FDA’s advisory panel on Reproductive Health

He and his wife Amy currently run Three Notch’d Vineyard in Albemarle County, Virginia.
